Who’s new to the WEC for 2021? Part 3
The recently-announced FIA WEC entry list revealed a total of seven new teams for the 2021 season.
Over the past couple of weeks, FIAWEC.com has given a rundown of the five new LMP2 teams: Richard Mille Racing Team, Inter Europol Competition, ARC Bratislava, Team WRT and RealTeam Racing. Today, however, is the turn of the LMGTE Am category which sees two new teams for WEC Season 9.
First, we have:
D’Station Racing
Japanese team D’station Racing will join forces with British squad TF Sport to enter this year’s WEC as a full-time LMGTE Am entry.
The No. 777 Aston Martin Vantage GTE will be driven by Gold-rated driver Tomonobu Fujii and Bronze-rated Satoshi Hoshino – both from Japan. A third Silver-rated driver will be announced soon.
D’station Racing has been linked with Aston Martin since 2019 and the team has previously competed in Super GT, as well as the Asian Le Mans Series. The Japanese outfit will race in this month’s Asian Le Mans Series (two double-header race meetings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi) with an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 shared by Hoshino, Fujii and Britain’s Tom Gamble.
The team has also confirmed it will compete across two classes of the 2021 Super Taikyu Series: Japan’s touring car endurance racing series.
Iron Lynx
After winning the Michelin Le Mans Cup, the Italian team makes its world championship debut with two Ferrari 488 GTE Evos.
Bronze-rated driver Claudio Schiavoni will be joined by Silver-graded Matteo Cressoni and Andrea Piccini (Gold-rated) in the No. 60 488 GTE. The three Italians competed in last year’s ELMS together.
The second car, the No. 85, will be entrusted to the "Iron Dames" of Michelle Gatting (Denmark), Rahel Frey (Switzerland) and Manuela Gostner (Italy) – the three females making the step up to the global stage having performed in ELMS for the past two seasons.
The trio have already competed at 24 Hours of Le Mans together on two occasions (in 2019 and 2020) – finishing ninth in class both times with Ferrari. Frey also raced at Le Mans back in 2010 with Matech Competition at the wheel of a Ford GT1 car.
