One month until inaugural WEC race at Imola
In one month, the FIA World Endurance Championship will spring back into action for round two of the 2024 season - the 6 Hours of Imola (19-21 April).
It will mark the first time that the WEC has been to Imola, with Monza previously hosting the Italian round of the World Championship since 2021.
Despite being new to the WEC, Imola has hosted several other endurance races in recent times. In 2011, a round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup was included in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) calendar from 2013 to 2016 - an event that returned in 2022 and is again scheduled for July later this year.
Further back, in 1984, the racetrack hosted a round of the World Sport Prototype Championship - the 1000 KM of Imola, won by German pairing Hans-Joachim Stuck and Stefan Bellof, driving a Porsche 956 B.
Italian manufacturers – Ferrari, Lamborghini and Isotta Fraschini – will account for the three of the 14 prestigious car marques that will compete in Hypercar and all-new LMGT3 category next month.
A total of nine Italian teams will battle it out on home soil next month with a whole host of local drivers (Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and Antonio Fuoco for Ferrari AF Corse; Mirko Bortolotti and Edoardo Mortara for Lamborghini Iron Lynx) plus many more in the LMGT3 category including multiple MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi, who will drive a BMW M4 LMGT3 car with Team WRT.
Supporting the WEC at 6 Hours of Imola will be Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe and Porsche Carrera Cup Germany.
