Q&A with Gustavo Menezes

America’s Gustavo Menezes will compete with Glickenhaus Racing in the brand-new Hypercar category for FIA WEC Season 9 before joining Peugeot Sport as the marque makes its welcome return to endurance racing in 2022.

Ahead of the upcoming season, the 26-year-old from California, answered some questions…

Hi Gustavo, what motivated you to join Peugeot in their comeback to endurance?
“I’ve always admired Peugeot’s tenacity to fight for victory across the board. I began watching endurance racing at the peak of the Peugeot v Audi battles. So, the moment I heard that the comeback was a reality, I knew that I needed to find a way to connect with Peugeot and align our goals of an overall victory.”

Can you tell us a bit about your new Peugoet team-mates?
“I have known JEV for a while now - he is a funny guy and very determined. I’ve raced against Mikkel [Jensen] in karting. James [Rossiter] and I have been friends for a long time and we speak almost daily. Loic [Duval] and I have driven at Rebellion before and he is very motivated. I haven’t had the chance to get to know Paul [Di Resta] or Kevin [Magnussen] that well yet but I’m excited they’re going to be my team-mates.”

What does the WEC and the 24 Hours of Le Mans mean to you?
“It represents the one word I live by - perseverance. Le Mans is more than a race, more than endurance, its persistence, never giving up - a team becomes a family. And after weeks of gruelling work, if everything goes perfectly and everyone stays motivated, then maybe you’ll come home with a victory.”

What is your favourite meal?
“Nothing in this world is like a Japanese steak... but on a daily basis, I’m a massive fan of chicken and rice dishes!”

What do you eat before a race?
“I eat chicken with rice and eggs almost every time before getting in the car.”

What would you say is your best quality?
“I am very open, honest and love to talk and inspire others to get the best from themselves."
