Latest WEC Talk now available: “We could see one of the quickest Le Mans in recent history!”

Episode four of WEC Talk – the official FIA World Endurance Championship podcast – is now live!

This week’s podcast features an in-depth interview with Pascal Zurlinden, Porsche's Director of GT Factory Motorsports, who talks about how the Weissach-based GTE team is dealing with lockdown and how “the development never stops.” He explains: “Everything is still going on as usual. We’re already used to working from home, often being online from hotels and airports.”

As well as an interview with Frenchman Zurlinden, expert endurance racing commentator and WEC Talk host Martin Haven also speaks to Goodyear’s Motorsport Director Ben Crawley who gives an insight into what goes into make a racing tyre and the logistical demands.

He also points out that the date change for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans could make for one of the fastest in the event’s illustrious history…

Crawley explains: “In September, we may seem some cooler temperatures… and what we could see is one of the quickest Le Mans races in recent history. Typically with cooler temperatures, there is a focus on some of the softer specification tyres.  So, with cooler the conditions there is more potential for the tyres to perform to the maximum with shorter and fewer pit stops. By using softer tyres, there is an expectation of faster speeds and so it could be a very fast Le Mans!”

Finally, we hear from Aston Martin Racing’s Nicki Thiim in Salzburg who talks to us about his excitement about becoming a first-time dad in just over one month’s time, comparing it to being “a bit like the start of Le Mans!”

The popular Dane also discusses esports and why he’s not taking it too seriously plus some of the implications of moving this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans to September and how this can impact performance out on track. Thiim goes on to finish the interview with a special request: “If anyone has any good interesting [baby] names, then the fans can definitely let me know!”

Don’t forget to listen to WEC Talk and check back in two weeks’ time when we will have more exclusive interviews from drivers and key names from the world of endurance racing.
