David Cheng: Shanghai is a special circuit for me

David Cheng makes his second appearance at the Shanghai International Circuit in just three weeks with the OAK Racing run Morgan-Judd this weekend.

The Beijing born racer teams up with Ho-Pin Tung and Mark Patterson this weekend in the Dunlop-shod No.35 LMP2 car after winning the most recent round of the Asian Le Mans Series, also at Shanghai, last month.

“That was a nice victory for Ho-Pin and I,” said Cheng today. “We were on Michelin tyres, whereas now we are on Dunlop rubber so you notice the little differences immediately. It will be interesting to see after qualifying where we stand but we are really working towards a very good and consistent race pace for tomorrow. So far it has been pretty much to plan. We could have done without the rain but I am sure there are other teams saying very much the same. Whatever the conditions, I know that we will be in the best shape possible because OAK Racing is such a brilliant team.

Cheng thrives on racing in the country of his birth and believes that endurance racing is gathering some serious momentum with racing fans in the country.

“I have noticed more and more fans coming to the races every year,” said the 23 year old. “They are really starting to understanding the racing in terms of the classes and how the strategies work more and more. It is nice to see and I am sure we will put on a great show for them this weekend.”
