It was the battle for track position that had the racing world buzzing after the first round of the WEC at Silverstone. Even seasoned commentators struggled to catch their breath as Neel Jani and Marcel Fässler swapped position lap after lap in an epic struggle for the lead of the race.
“I must say this (the battle with Jani) was one of the best fights I have had in my whole career and I really enjoyed this whole race,” said Fässler after Silverstone. “I have to say it was pretty fair from Neel who gave space and I think we raced well together. I must say it was a bit annoying him passing me on the straights like that! It was really a nice race to drive and I think what we showed today was great.”
Neel Jani’s Porsche 919 Hybrid showed incredible efficiency and power sling-shotting out of the Becketts complex and the Porsche ace was as equally exhilarated as his fellow Swiss racer, saying: “I definitely enjoyed the race with Marcel today, especially as I know we can trust each other driving side-by-side without actually touching. Obviously I couldn’t avoid smiling on the straights each time I went by him!”
Fans at Spa this weekend will be able to see if Toyota and Porsche can exact revenge on the Audi R18 e-tron quattros. Porsche will have three of its sensational Porsche 911 Hybrid cars at Spa, with current F1 star Nico Hülkenberg joining the squad for the first of two races this season.
A bumper grid of 34 cars is entered at Spa with a superb spread of variety in the four eagerly contested categories – LMP1, LMP1, LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am.
