All eyes will be on the G-Drive Racing and SMP Racing championship fight this weekend. With the G-Drive trio of Roman Rusinov, Julien Canal and Olivier Pla leading SMP’s Sergey Zlobin by eight points going in to the final round.
“The qualifying point will be more important than usual of course,” stated Rusinov. “If we get the point it will mean that we can afford to finish second and not worry so much. But we always race to win so it will be nice to achieve a title with a victory for sure.”
Even if G-Drive were beaten to pole by the #27 SMP Oreca-Nissan and then finished second to them they would still take the titles, even though they would be level on points, due to taking more maximum point scores in races this season (4-2).
“We are in a good position yes, especially compared to where we were in the middle of the race at Bahrain,” continued Rusinov. “I hope that the race will be good and clean but we have already seen some very close racing between us. But we will just see how the race goes this weekend.”
Rusinov was quick to praise the G-Drive Racing team this season in what has turned in to a very impressive campaign.
“The team has grown in to I think the best team in LMP2 this year and we have some really great ingredients together which have grown and matured nicely and all with a new car – the Ligier JS P2. We could have won every race this year, even at Le Mans. So we have proven we are the quickest, now we need to underline it by winning the LMP2 titles here in Brazil.
The Russian entered team is also making waves in Rusinov’s homeland. “Yes we have good coverage and marketing for the G-Drive name and the FIA WEC over in Russia with over 1600 fuel stations having images and information of our project everywhere which is really nice. If we take the titles then that will only grow.”
