Race-winner Shwartzman to rejoin FIA WEC grid with Peugeot in 2027

Team Peugeot TotalEnergies has recruited Robert Shwartzman to form part of its Hypercar driver sextet in the FIA World Endurance Championship next season, marking a return to the fray for the former race-winner for the first time since 2024.

Off the back of an impressive early career in single-seaters, clinching the FIA Formula 3 Championship crown in 2019 and the runner-up spoils in the FIA Formula 2 Championship two years later – on his way to securing test and reserve driver roles for Ferrari and Sauber in Formula 1 – Shwartzman made his endurance racing bow in 2023, initially competing in the GT World Challenge.

At the end of that year, he set the fastest lap by more than half-a-second during the annual FIA WEC Rookie Test in Bahrain in a Ferrari 499P, going on to race full-time for the Prancing Horse the following campaign in its independently-entered AF Corse Hypercar. He made an immediate impact by finishing fourth on his series debut, prior to triumphing alongside team-mates Robert Kubica and Yifei Ye at Texas’ Circuit of The Americas.

In 2025, the 26-year-old moved to the United States to contest the IndyCar Series, where he again made headlines by becoming the first rookie to secure pole position for the legendary Indianapolis 500 in more than four decades.

He will participate in several test sessions behind the wheel of the Peugeot 9X8 over the coming months, before bolstering the French manufacturer’s six-strong FIA WEC line-up next season.

“I’m extremely happy to be returning to the FIA World Endurance Championship after my time racing in the United States,” Shwartzman enthused. “Endurance racing is something I’ve really missed over the past two seasons, and I’m thrilled to be joining Team Peugeot TotalEnergies.

“From my very first discussions with the team, I felt genuinely welcomed and immediately part of the project, within a highly professional and ambitious environment. The 2027 programme is particularly exciting, and I can’t wait to contribute to this new chapter and help write the next pages of the story together.”

“We are delighted to welcome Robert to Team Peugeot TotalEnergies,” echoed Team Principal, Emmanuel Esnault. “He is unquestionably one of the most promising talents of his generation and already possesses a wealth of experience gained at the highest level in both single-seater and endurance racing. His natural speed, adaptability and maturity make him an ideal fit for our project.

“He is already fully involved in the preparation of our 2027 programme and will play an important role in the team’s future. We greatly appreciate the trust he has placed in us by joining the Peugeot Sport Endurance family and sharing our ambitions. We are committed to building a strong relationship with Robert, both on and off-track, and to writing a successful new chapter together.”
