Former BMW and Renault F1 driver, Robert Kubica, will get his first taste of world-class sports prototype action at the official FIA WEC Rookie test this Sunday. The Polish driver, who has competed mainly in rallying in recent years, will undertake the test with the ByKolles LMP1 Privateer team in the Austrian-entered team’s CLM P1/01 AER.
The 31 year-old won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and was recognised as one of the best up and coming drivers in F1 until a debilitating rally accident in early 2011 curtailed his Grand Prix career.
Kubica will join several drivers in sampling new categories in the WEC this Sunday. In addition to Kubica, the three specially-chosen rookie drivers from the WEC – Pipo Derani, Gustavo Menezes and Paul-Loup Chatin - will get their chance to showcase their talents with the three LMP1 manufacturer teams, Audi, Porsche and Toyota.
In 2015 Juan Pablo Montoya tested with the Porsche Team and, of course, Formula One Champion Fernando Alonso has been a high profile visitor to the WEC on more than one occasion.
