2014 - a year of celebration for Bahrain and all things automotive

2014 - a year of celebration for Bahrain and all things automotive
11/11/2014

2014 is a year of celebration for the Bahrain International Circuit and the Kingdom itself.

The fantastic circuit and its world-class facilities, under the management and leadership of BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, opened 10 years ago and it has played host to the world’s leading sports prototype and GT championship, the FIA World Endurance Championship, for the last three years.

This year also marks the centenary of the arrival of the first car in Bahrain.  The General Directorate of Traffic will use the occasion of the FIA WEC’s presence for the 6 Hours of Bahrain (on Saturday, 15 November) to stage an exhibition of around 100 classic cars at the Bahrain International Circuit.  The event will highlight traffic history and operations in Bahrain and safety awareness, a campaign which echoes the FIA’s own global Action for Road Safety programme.

The first car to enter Bahrain was from the "King" marque in 1914 and was owned by Shaikh Abdullah bin Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa.  It arrived by sea from India, and is probably a little different to the cars racing here this weekend.  As you can see from these photographs from BIC, motorsport has come a long way in Bahrain!
