6 Hrs Silverstone: Ferrari leads in LMGTE Pro and Am after first 90 minutes
20/04/2014

It has been an action-packed start to the 6 Hours of Silverstone, the opening round of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship.  In front of many thousands of keen sportscar fans, but under heavy clouds and cold conditions, the race got underway at 12 noon – waved off by the race’s Grand Marshal, Derek Bell.

AF Corse’s World GTE Champion, Gianmaria Bruni, led away the LMGTE Pro category but it was only a matter of 5 laps before the No.51 Ferrari 458 Italia was being pressured by both the Porsche Team Manthey entries.  On lap 9 Britain’s Nick Tandy overtook the Italian in the No.91 Porsche 911 RSR, followed through some six laps later by the No.92 of Fred Makowiecki.

It was then that the race really came alive because the sprinkling of rain, which had fallen over the Silverstone circuit since the start, increased considerably and the pits became a hive of activity.  After most, but not all, of the LMGTE Pro and Am competitors came into the pits to change to treaded tyres to cope with the wet conditions, the race began to settle into a rhythm.  The rain then stopped and teams had to make a second round of stops for slick tyres.

After the first 90 minutes of racing, the AF Corse No.51 Ferrari of Toni Vilander now leads again, ahead of the No.92 Porsche of Makowiecki and the No.97 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8 of Stefan Mucke – that car having been started by Darren Turner.  In fourth place in LMGTE Pro is the No.71 AF Corse Ferrari of James Calado and Davide Rigon, that car having made one less stop than the others.

In LMGTE Am, Ram Racing’s Ben Collins now leads the class in the No.53 Ferrari 458 ahead of the No.81 AF Corse Ferrari of Sam Bird who impressed in the early laps of the race.  Third in the category is the Danish-crewed No.95 Aston Martin Vantage V8 of Kristian Poulsen which is another car to have only made one pit stop so far.

With the weather conditions changing frequently, it is far too early to predict who might still be leading in another 4+ hours!
