Much has changed over the course of the intervening 13 years – but one element that has remained staunchly steadfast is FIA WEC’s core DNA, pitting pioneering prototypes and recognisable road-based GT cars against one another in a thrilling test of endurance, as fearless warriors go wheel-to-wheel for world championship glory at eye-watering speeds.
Myriad high-profile marques – from Alpine to Aston Martin and Ferrari to Ford – have won in the series’ various classes, and there will be significant pride at stake in Japan, as brands bid to become the milestone 100th winner in what has been widely described as a golden era for the sport.
With eight different manufacturers represented in the headlining Hypercar category and nine preparing for battle in LMGT3, a captivating contest in the shadow of Mount Fuji seems assured.
