The venue might be a new addition to the FIA WEC schedule, but it is no stranger to high-calibre endurance racing competition, having in recent years successfully hosted the European Le Mans Series and Michelin Le Mans Cup.

Measuring 4.657km and comprising 14 turns, the track’s long main straight and variety of fast, flowing corners combined with more technical sections will truly test cars’ all-round capabilities and aerodynamic attributes – and with finely-poised title battles in both categories, a good result could prove crucial to the ultimate destiny of the coveted crowns.

In the headlining Hypercar class, just 20 points separate the top four crews in the Drivers’ standings, with Toyota and BMW having shared the lion’s share of the season’s spoils and looking to make it a two-way fight for honours – unless defending world champion Ferrari can spring a late surprise.

The Prancing Horse has a potential ace up its sleeve in the shape of home hero Miguel Molina – who hails from nearby Girona – while Aston Martin’s Alex Riberas and Genesis’ Daniel Juncadella were both Barcelona-born.

The event will, moreover, mark the long-awaited return – and seasonal debut – of Alex Lynn at Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA, after the British star was obliged to miss the majority of the campaign due to surgery for a neck injury. There is also a ‘TBA’ on the entry list alongside Paul di Resta and Nick Cassidy in the #93 Peugeot 9X8, prompted by the recent departure of Stoffel Vandoorne.

In LMGT3, meanwhile, TF Sport’s #33 Corvette continues to hold the advantage following its victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier in the year, but with time running out, adversaries representing brands including Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari are redoubling their efforts to turn the tables – setting the scene for a sensational scrap for supremacy…
