The FIA has highlighted the vital role played by volunteers in motorsport through a new video released on its official Instagram account, filmed during the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Lone Star Le Mans event at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in September.
The feature is part of the FIA’s ‘Volunteers and Officials Month’, a new initiative created to recognise marshals, stewards, race directors and event officials whose dedication ensures the safe and fair running of competitions around the world. From grassroots events to FIA World Championships, volunteers are essential to the sport’s operation yet often remain out of the spotlight.
At COTA, the FIA’s video crew spoke to trackside volunteers working in demanding conditions to understand what drives their commitment. Many described their passion for motorsport and a strong sense of community as key motivations for giving their time and energy in roles essential to making racing possible.
Throughout October, FIA Member Clubs and various championships are celebrating volunteer contributions in a number of different ways. These include national and regional awards recognising outstanding service, social media campaigns sharing personal stories and recruitment drives aimed at attracting the next generation of officials.

The sport’s international governing body also supports volunteer development through the FIA University, which provides training and mentoring across disciplines including marshalling, safety and motorsport medicine. So far this year, 33,934 participants have enrolled in its open-access learning modules, each completing an average of over 100 minutes of training.
By promoting their stories and investing in their growth, the FIA reinforces that volunteers and officials remain at the beating heart of the sport.
