The impressive new RGR Sports by Morand team is all set to embark on making its FIA World Endurance Championship debut at Silverstone this weekend.
The team, which is the brainchild of FIA WEC regular Ricardo Gonzalez, will see the Mexican joined by Bruno Senna and Filipe Albuquerque in the patriotic red, white and green Ligier JS P2-Nissan.
For Albuquerque, 2016 will see a first ever full FIA WEC campaign with RGR Sports by Morand after a two-race programme last season in the third Audi R18 e-tron quattro he shared with Rene Rast and Marco Bonanomi.
“It is going to be a fascinating season with more cars and I think a higher quality field,” said Albuquerque. “I really like LMP2 and enjoyed my races with JOTA for two years. Now I have a roof over my LMP2 head! So far, so good for us, I think we can be really competitive. Ricardo (Gonzalez) wants to win but also have fun winning too. This is a great philosophy and as a team we are all united in these goals.”
The 6 Hours of Mexico presented by ATT in September will undoubtedly see the RGR Sports by Morand team as the crowd favourite. For Albuquerque, who raced at the Circuit Hermanos Rodrigues in A1 GP in 2006, it will be one of the highlights of a busy season.
“I loved racing in Mexico, the public are so passionate about the racing there. We will be a big focus which will be nice and I think that they can expect a fantastic weekend there,” said Albuquerque. “The track looks very nice on the TV and for sure it will be a lot smoother from what I remember from the old circuit. We cannot wait to be racing in front of the Mexican people.”
