The forthcoming 6 Hours of Fuji (26-28 September) not only marks the penultimate round of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship campaign, it will also be the series’ 100th race – with all 36 high-calibre crews on the entry list aiming to secure their own little piece of history.
For years, Fuji Speedway was the stronghold of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, and the multiple world champions will be back to full strength on home soil, with Mike Conway returning to the cockpit of the #7 GR010 Hybrid Hypercar alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries, after having to miss the most recent outing at Circuit of The Americas due to a broken collarbone.
Like Kobayashi, Ryō Hirakawa is sure to receive plenty of enthusiastic support in the #8 Toyota, in a race that has seen a Japanese driver proudly take to the top step of the podium on all bar one occasion since 2016.
The only time that was not the case was last year, when Porsche Penske Motorsport deposed the home heroes. Toyota will be keen to restore the traditional order after uncharacteristically scraping just a single point at Fuji 12 months ago, while Porsche duo Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor will be chasing back-to-back triumphs in more than one respect, having clinched their first victory of 2025 at COTA last weekend.
The defending world champions will be without Matt Campbell alongside them in the upcoming event, as the German marque slims back down to two-driver line-ups, while elsewhere in the 18-strong Hypercar field, Stoffel Vandoorne will make his final appearance for Team Peugeot TotalEnergies before yielding his seat to the French outfit’s current development driver, Théo Pourchaire for the Bahrain season finale.
Conway’s comeback means José María López will rejoin the LMGT3 grid in Akkodis ASP Team’s Lexus RC F, and at Racing Spirit of Léman, American Anthony McIntosh returns to the fray eager to pick up from where he left off on his scene-stealing debut in the series in São Paulo in July.
Home hopes in the category, though, will rest squarely upon the shoulders of United Autosports ace Marino Sato, who will head into the weekend riding the crest of a wave after claiming his maiden FIA WEC win in Texas.
