Lynn ‘couldn’t be more driven’ as he joins McLaren Hypercar squad

McLaren Racing has confirmed the third member of its Hypercar driver line-up for the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship campaign, with Alex Lynn coming on-board as the famous British brand returns to the peak of the long-distance discipline for the first time in 30 years.

It was announced earlier today that Lynn – who makes his seasonal debut in Barcelona this weekend after missing the opening six rounds of 2026 due to neck surgery – will depart Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA at the end of the current campaign.

The 33-year-old is one of Britain’s most accomplished and versatile racing drivers, with a career spanning single-seaters – including race-winning success in the FIA Formula E World Championship and roles as a Formula 1 test and development driver – and top-level endurance racing.

His career highlights include winning the Macau Grand Prix in 2013, the GP3 Series title in 2014 and the 12 Hours of Sebring in both 2017 and 2022, as well as victory in the LMGTE Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2020 and the European Le Mans Series’ LMP2 class crown in 2023.

“As a British driver, is there any bigger honour than competing for McLaren Racing? I don’t think so,” mused Lynn, who will join the already announced Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor in papaya next year. “It’s a team name that I am incredibly proud to wear on my chest and that I take great pride and responsibility in representing.

“I don’t underestimate the challenge ahead – I know from experience that FIA WEC and Le Mans are incredibly tough to win and more competitive today than ever before – but I can already see that Zak [Brown], James [Barclay] and the whole McLaren Hypercar Team are laying the foundations of what could be a championship-winning team. I couldn’t be more driven towards winning a world title and taking victory at Le Mans for the most iconic racing brand in the world.”

In recent years, the Essex-born ace has firmly established himself as a leading protagonist at the forefront of global endurance racing across the LMGTE Pro, LMP2 and Hypercar categories. He secured pole position at Le Mans last year prior to playing a key part in Cadillac’s breakthrough FIA WEC triumph in Brazil. McLaren Hypercar Team Principal James Barclay believes Lynn will be a major boon to the project.

“We are delighted to welcome Alex to the team,” he enthused. “He’s a proven winner with extensive experience at the highest level of endurance racing, and his speed, technical understanding and knowledge of the FIA World Endurance Championship will be a real asset to our programme.

“Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability on the biggest stages, including at Le Mans, and his signing adds further strength and depth to an already exciting driver line-up as we prepare for our return to the pinnacle of sportscar racing.”
