Maxime Martin: “Eau Rouge: the toughest corner in the world!”

The latest episode of WEC Talk is here and this week we concentrate on the FIA WEC’s return to racing in only two weeks’ time!

The tenth instalment of the official FIA World Endurance Championship podcast features FIA WEC CEO Gérard Nevev who talks about the precautionary measures that are being put in place in order to ensure the entire WEC paddock is as safe as possible ahead of its visit to Spa-Francorchamps.

Neveu explains: “It is crucial to have racing back again – mandatory, in fact. It is like if you ask me how important it is to feel your heart beating… If it doesn’t happen, you would die. It’s the same for motorsport, if we aren’t racing then we will be destroyed. Nevertheless, the fact we can race again means that we are still alive and we guarantee that we will deliver a great championship with a proper result. We will try to respect all the efforts that the competitors have made since the start of the season.”

As the event is being held behind closed doors, Neveu also acknowledges the absence of the championship’s extremely loyal fans: “With a double-header of endurance racing at Spa-Francorchamps for both ELMS and WEC coming up, we will try to do our best to make sure the fans can follow us throughout both race weekends.  We are sad not to be able to host them due to the circumstances and of course, we will miss them a lot.”

WEC Talk host Martin Haven also chats to Aston Martin Racing’s LMGTE Pro driver Maxime Martin about the importance of Spa-Francorchamps to Belgian racing drivers and his family connections. Indeed, Martin is the only local entry to be fighting for victory on home turf out of the 87 WEC drivers registered.
Below is an excerpt from his interview:

“For every driver Spa is a special track but even more as a Belgian driver because of its history. For me, we have a lot of family connections with the circuit which makes it extra special – with WEC and the victory we had last year in the snow, rain and in those crazy conditions! Also, from my dad and uncle who have won a lot of races at the circuit… seven wins in total as a family. Spa feels part of my life and will always be a very special circuit for me… And then you have Eau Rouge, which is the toughest corner in the world!”

Don’t forget to listen HERE and check back in one month’s time when WEC Talk will have more exclusive interviews from drivers and key names from the world of endurance racing.
