FIA WEC World Endurance Champion Allan McNish has been named by the ACO as Grand Marshal for the 82nd 24 Hours of Le Mans on 14/15th June, round three of the FIA WEC. Alongside the Scot to carry out the official duty of giving the start of the world's most famous sportcar race will be double Formula 1 World Champion, Fernando Alonso.
A three-time winner at Le Mans, McNish retired from driving with Audi Sport after clinching the World Championship title with team mates Tom Kristensen and Loic Duval at the end of the 2013 season. He remains an ambassador for Audi Sport, attending the 6 Hours of Silverstone and WEC 6 Hours of Spa with the team which has enjoyed such success at Le Mans in recent years.
As Grand Marshal McNish will drive the leading car, the official vehicle which leads the cars round on the formation lap, and he will pull off at the end of it giving Alonso the pleasure of unleashing the field at 14h00 on Saturday 14th June.
Scuderia Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso, will make history by being the first driver still currently racing to give the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Spaniard, who used to race against McNish in F1, follows in the footsteps of his boss, Ferrari President Luca di Montezomo, who gave the start of the race in 2009.
