Memories of Le Mans: Ben Keating

In the run-up to 24 Hours of Le Mans – the penultimate round of FIA WEC Season 8 which takes place from 19-20 September - we quizzed various WEC drivers about their past experiences from the legendary event.

Next in our series, we hear from Team Project 1 driver Ben Keating who is set to take part in his sixth Le Mans this year.  Below is what the American who hails from Texas had to say.

What is your first memory of Le Mans?
“Coming to the race as a spectator in 2014 without any hotel, parking, or plans. I walked over 5 miles to get into the circuit and I ended up sleeping on the floor in a corner of Vanessa's hospitality."

And what is your favourite memory competing there?
“As an Am driver, you dream of being at the end of the biggest race of the year with the outcome on your shoulders. That was my situation last year (2019) where I was able to keep my Ford GT ahead of Jorg Bergmiester in the Porsche. He gained 12 seconds on me over 20 minutes, but I kept the lead and it was a magical moment for me.”

What’s your favourite section of the circuit and why?
“My favourite section is Indianapolis. When you get it right, it feels so incredible and so fast. But when you get it wrong, the penalty is huge. You can easily lose the race here, but it feels so good to get it right.”

What is key to the perfect lap at Le Mans?
“Most people think top speed, because the lap is so long, but I really think a great lap at Le Mans is about braking. Not necessarily heroic late braking, but being super smooth, rolling the speed through the corner, and being in control of the car while pushing the limits in the brake zones. Usually when pushing the limits of brake zones, it is a big risk for the driver and a bit of a panic. But being good on the brakes at Le Mans makes the best lap time in my opinion.”

If you could go back in time and choose to compete in Le Mans on any year, what would it be and why?
“1968 - I want to win Le Mans in a Ford GT40 with the Gulf Livery. To me, that is one of the most iconic cars from Le Mans. And being a third generation Ford dealer, means that I have big emotional connections to the brand.”

If you could choose any two team-mates (dead or alive), to compete at Le Mans with who would they be and why?
“As far as teammates, I would have liked to have been the third driver for AJ Foyt and Dan Gurney in the Ford GT40 of 1967. An all-American team with such brilliant personalities and incredible driving skills in addition to the history of those two guys. Plus, the bonus of being the first to spray champagne from the podium!”
