One of many fresh faces in the FIA WEC this season will be Matt Rao. The British driver has switched from single-seaters to LMP2 with the Manor squad, sharing an ORECA 05-Nissan with Le Mans LMP2 champion Richard Bradley and former F1 driver Roberto Merhi.
Silver categorised Rao is relishing the prospect of battling against fellow formula racing converts, but is realistic about prospects at the beginning of the season.
“This weekend will be all about more mileage with the No.45 car, because apart from a shakedown at a very wet Rockingham a few weeks ago, we haven't done many miles,” said Rao. “We still have a lot to do but there is a great feeling in the team that once we get more running in then we can start getting some really great results with this package.
“We actually came together as a team more based on our height really,” confirmed Rao. “Richard, Roberto and I are all approximately the same size so that was the main determining factor. Obviously Richard has proved to be a top performer after last season in particular and Roberto is very quick and a top driver. I think we have a nicely balanced team at Manor.”
Rao, who only started racing five years ago, has switched his focus to endurance racing after a successful single-seater career saw him crowned Formula Ford champion in 2012 and runner-up in the 2014 Formula Three International Series.
“The plan is a long-term one with endurance racing yes,” confirmed Rao. “This season is all about soaking up everything and gaining the experience. I want to make a name for myself of course and I think that the WEC is the best place to do that in sportscars. From what I have seen so far the level of competition is incredibly high. I can’t wait for the racing to begin, and starting here at Silverstone is an added bonus.”
