As the FIA World Endurance Championship travels Stateside for round five of its 2026 season, Lone Star Le Mans in Texas, this weekend (4-6 September), American driver Logan Sargeant reveals how much he embraces competing for the iconic ‘Blue Oval’.
Sargeant’s association with Ford has been, quite literally, decades in the making, with the rising endurance racing star telling fiawec.com how deeply the Dearborn brand is rooted in his upbringing: “My dad’s had a Ford truck since I was born. He still has one today. Our whole life, we’ve had Ford cars and trucks – we’ve never not had one – so it almost feels like home to me.”
They say home is where the heart is, and this is where Logan is heading with FIA WEC descending upon Austin’s Circuit of The Americas (COTA) for the series’ US outing – Lone Star Le Mans. “It’s always fun to race in front of a home crowd,” mulls the Fort Lauderdale-born racer. “I still get a lot of support from fans from my Formula 1 days, and a lot of them are happy to see me with Ford now.”
The former Williams F1 driver won’t turn up at the track’s famous ‘Big Red’ corner in his dad’s Ford truck, but with a different kind of Blue Oval machinery. After sporadic forays into sportscar racing, including the European Le Mans Series and IMSA, Sargeant currently competes in FIA WEC’s LMGT3 category with Ford’s Proton Competition-run #88 Mustang, alongside Stefano Gattuso and Giammarco Levorato.
“They both have tons of experience,” Logan says of his Italian stablemates. “I’m enjoying the dynamic of working as a team – something I’m not so used to from my single-seater days!”
Adapting from the more solitary environment of single-seaters to the collaborative world of endurance racing certainly looks to have been a fruitful switch for the 25-year-old.
On his FIA WEC debut at Imola back in April, the #88 entry finished in a points-scoring position. Before the summer break, the Florida native then helped to secure the team’s best result of the season thus far with fifth place in the Rolex 6 Hours of São Paulo: “Fortunately, Brazil was a huge turnaround for us. It was good to really be able to fight at the front. We’re going in the right direction, and the goal for COTA is to build upon the progress we made last time out and, hopefully, pick up a podium.”
Logan adds how important it is for him to learn every aspect of FIA WEC as best as possible to kick off the next phase of his career in endurance racing. Earlier this year, the former Williams Driver Academy graduate was unveiled, with Sebastian Priaulx and 2010 Le Mans overall winner Mike Rockenfeller, as one of the first three factory drivers to spearhead Ford Racing’s forthcoming Hypercar effort.
Experienced trio Matt Campbell, Tom Blomqvist and Nick Yelloly subsequently joined the Blue Oval’s roster, too: “It’s a huge privilege for me. I want to go into Hypercar next year as prepared as I can be, and this year in LMGT3 is a big part of that preparation.”
Over the summer, Ford successfully completed the yet-to-be-named Hypercar’s first full test during three days on-track at France’s Circuit Paul Ricard, a short hop from chassis-builder ORECA’s facilities. Sargeant reckons the squad has begun its push to the peak of endurance in the best possible way.
“We really hit the ground running,” he opined. “Starting testing from where we did is a huge credit to the team. There have already been countless hours poured into this project, including a ton of time in the simulator. Now, it’s about making sure everything comes together flawlessly, and that’s the next step for us.”
The return of Ford to the pinnacle of international endurance racing promises to be another reason not to miss out on the 2027 campaign of the ‘awesome’ series that is FIA WEC, as Logan puts it. Indeed, the US star could follow in the footsteps of racing greats Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt as the next American racer to triumph outright at Le Mans with the Blue Oval.
“To bring Ford back to the top class of endurance racing – and from day one – is very special,” he acknowledged in conclusion. “To have the opportunity to win at Le Mans with Ford will be amazing, and I’m going to be pushing hard to try to make that a reality.”
As Henry Ford II famously said to his team before embarking upon the iconic Le Mans rivalry with Ferrari in the sixties, the time has come for Logan Sargeant to go like hell!
