Fastest time and last lap drama for Toyota #8 in FP2
Sébastien Buemi topped the timesheets for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing in this evening’s two-hour FP2 session at Le Mans, after Robert Kubica’s pace-setting Ferrari was penalised for a pit-lane speeding infringement – but it was not all plain sailing for the Japanese car either…
The final track running on Wednesday sees the second Free Practice session fall to the #8 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GR010 Hybrid Hypercar as Sébastien Buemi posts the fastest time
The four-time Le Mans winner peaks on a 3m26.156s in the car he shares with team-mates Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa
But the session ends with drama for the #8 Toyota, as Hirakawa appears to be in collision with the #57 Kessel Racing Ferrari driven by Casper Stevenson at the Karting corner
Robert Kubica had set the fastest lap in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari, but lost the top spot for a pit-lane speeding offence which elevated the #8 Toyota to first place
Norman Nato in the #12 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA he races with qualifying pace-setter Alex Lynn and Will Stevens peaks with a 3m26.607s lap but is 0.451s off the leading Toyota in second
Third is the initially quickest but then penalised distinctive yellow #83 AF Corse Ferrari, as Yifei Ye tops the time in that car with a quickest lap of 3m26.680s
The additional #4 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 takes fourth position, as Pascal Wehrlein gets increasingly to grips with his new challenge in his first-ever Le Mans
The second-best Ferrari 499P is the #50 Ferrari AF Corse entry, as Miguel Molina posts quickest time in the reigning Le Mans-winning car in fifth place
The #15 BMW with Raffaele Marciello at the wheel is sixth, ahead of the #5 Porsche Penske Motorsport entry in seventh
The rest of the top ten in FP2 sees the #20 BMW in eighth, the #38 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series.R in ninth and the #51 Ferrari AF Corse in tenth
The recent TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps-winning #51 Ferrari AF Corse 499P of Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi misses the first 35 minutes of the session with a suspected turbo problem, but the car joins the session later on and completes 21 laps to place 14th
But there is big trouble for the #6 Porsche 963, as it is disqualified from qualifying after being found to be underweight at post-session technical checks. That penalty means the #009 Aston Martin Valkyrie will take part in tomorrow evening’s Hyperpole session
LMGT3
Akkodis ASP Team takes a one-two sweep in FP2 as the #87 Lexus heads the sister #78 machine to consolidate the French outfit’s recent strong form with the Japanese sportscar
José María López, who is taking part in his first LMGT3 race at Le Mans, claims the best time with a 3m55.422s effort
That fastest class lap is just 0.027s quicker than the #78 Lexus, with ‘super-sub’ Jack Hawksworth impressing again in the car he crews with Arnold Robin and Finn Gehrsitz
The best non-Lexus is the #92 Manthey 1st Phorm Porsche, as veteran Richard Lietz peaks with a 3m55.986s
The rest of the top six is completed by the #57 Kessel Racing Ferrari, the #61 Iron Lynx Mercedes and the #27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage, which continues to be consistently quick in hands of Mattia Drudi
The #63 Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 crashed by Stephen Grove in FP1 continues to be worked on to try and ready it for action on Thursday
LMP2
The fastest qualifying car doubles up with another top spot, as the #199 AO by TF Sport ‘spikes’ the opposition with another stellar display. This time, Dane Cameron sets the time with a best lap of 3m37.515s
That effort betters the #22 United Autosports Oreca-Gibson by just over a second, as Pietro Fittipaldi claims that car’s best time of the two-hour evening running
Third is the #37 CLX Pure Rxcing car of reigning FIA WEC LMGT3 champion Aliaksandr Malykhin, Tom Blomqvist and Tristan Vautier. Blomqvist sets the best time on a 3m38.720s
The top six in LMP2 is rounded out by #29 TDS Racing in fourth, the VDS Panis Racing car in fifth and the #183 AF Corse entry in sixth
