WEC Raced Around the Earth Ten Times in 2015
28/12/2015

The FIA World Endurance Championship raced in eight different countries this year and all of the competitors in each of the seven 6-hour and one 24-hour events completed over 52,000 race laps. This is equal to just over 417,400 kilometres during the 66 hours of racing, which is 33,000km further than the distance from the Earth to the Moon (384,400km) and over ten times around the world (40,075km).

The 24 Hours of Le Mans was the largest contributor to this total with a total distance of 214,615.86km for the 56 competitors and a race distance of 5,383.46km completed by the winning Porsche 919 Hybrid.

In terms of race distance, the longest of the six hour races was Spa-Francorchamps at 1,232.69km, with the winning Audi R18 completing 176 laps; the shortest was Shanghai at 921.22km, with the winning Porsche taking the chequered flag after 169 laps in the wet conditions.

The total race distance for each competitor was calculated by the number of race laps that a car completed during the race.  This figure was then combined with the race laps of the other competitors to give a total number of laps for that race.  That number was then multiplied by the circuit length to give a total distance figure for the entire field.

With an additional race in Mexico City in September 2016, the total race distance will approach 450,000km next season.
