Allan McNish’s stand-out 2018 LMP performers

In part two of our mid-season review with commentator and expert pundit, Allan McNish, we look at the LMP classes and who has impressed the Scot so far in the WEC Super Season at the wheels of the prototypes.

“You have to admire Mike Conway and how he has developed in LMP1 with Toyota. I think he has been pretty damn good,” says McNish.

“He and Kobayashi seem to push each other in a positive way and Lopez has learned a lot from his rookie season in 2017. But Mike, from an all-round consistency perspective, has been pretty impressive I’d say.”

In LMP2 a link within the all-Malaysian Jackie Chan DC Racing car has caught McNish’s eye throughout 2018.

“I’ve known Jazeman [Jafaar] since his F3 days so I’ve watched him come through and he has developed very well.”

The No.37 Jackie Chan DC Racing trio of Jafaar, Weiron Tan and Nabil Jeffri have enjoyed a very promising first WEC season with a pole position at Silverstone and a breakthrough victory at Fuji in October.

“You can see that they have bonded really well between them, so now they have a really strong unit and I expect them to probably add to their Fuji win in LMP2.

“I thought the joy with which they celebrated their success in Fuji in pretty tricky conditions showed that they are a very close team, which is precisely what you need in endurance racing.”

And that from the man who formed one of the strongest partnerships in endurance racing with Rinaldo (Dindo) Capello and Tom Kristensen.  Wise words indeed.
