Kevin Estre: “We are feeling the pressure”

The upcoming 1000 Miles of Sebring will provide a new challenge for the WEC’s Porsche GT Team as it will be the first time that the new spec Porsche 911 RSR – 19 car will face the circuit’s notorious bumps.

The reigning LMGTE Pro Champions are currently second in the overall standings, 32 points adrift of category leaders Aston Martin Racing who have taken the last two victories at CoTA and Bahrain.

“The championship was tight before but now it’s even closer after Ferrari were reinstated their win [from Shanghai],” explained No. 92 driver, Kevin Estre. “Ferrari have been quick all year and they were on the backfoot on points and now Aston Martin have a bit of margin. In terms of performance and consistency, we can fight until the end but we are definitely feeling the pressure.”

Estre continued: “We finished P2 in the first three races, and in Bahrain we were in contention for the win but then both cars had issues unfortunately. Three podium results so far is definitely good news considering we have a new car. We worked well on the development but there’s definitely still room for improvement.”

The Frenchman went on to explain some of the factors that can come into play while racing at the notoriously difficult Sebring International Raceway.

“The IMSA guys tested very recently at Sebring so we have some data from them. Although the weather can play a big role at this event as the temperatures can affect the tyres and set-up hugely. We had a good car last time at Sebring and the new-spec car has been good at every track so far. For sure, the two days testing ahead of the race will be super important to help us find the right set-up we need.”

Estre concluded: “I really like the circuit. I love the atmosphere and the locals who attend are super enthusiastic motor racing fans.  It is also really cool to have the American fans come look at our paddock and the racing which is quite different from theirs. Driving and physically, there are a lot of challenges but it’s a circuit everyone loves. Everybody is looking forward to it.”
