Single technical platform announced for Hypercar class from 2030

It was confirmed during today’s annual press conference ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans – the showpiece event on the FIA World Endurance Championship calendar – that the series’ headlining Hypercar category will be governed by a single two wheel-drive platform from 2030.

Devised in partnership with the FIA, Automobile Club de l’Ouest and IMSA, the same technical regulations will apply across the board, while adopting elements from both current rulesets. Manufacturers will remain free to either develop fully bespoke prototypes in-house or enlist the help of a common chassis-builder, as is the case with the current LMDh model.

All cars will be rear wheel-drive and hybrid-powered, with hybrid systems able to be purchased from a designated supplier or self-developed, as long as they adhere to the same specifications. Chassis must be built to updated FIA safety standards, while power unit architecture and displacement remain unrestricted and power output will increase by approximately 20kW.

Embracing FIA WEC’s famous freedom of design, manufacturers will be encouraged to exploit distinctive design elements, thereby offering enhanced visual identity for each brand for optimum return on investment.

Homologation will be valid for at least five years, with no performance evolution permitted unless directly linked to either reliability, safety or significant performance deficit.

The objective of the new unified Hypercar ruleset is to offer existing, incoming and prospective Hypercar manufacturers a stable environment in which to compete, while controlling budgets to guarantee accessibility and support the continued growth and success of FIA WEC’s burgeoning top-tier.

“Everyone wants to go in the same direction,” explained championship CEO, Frédéric Lequien. “It’s in the interest of everyone. I have no doubt that in the following weeks and months in the technical working groups, we will do the fine-tuning, but the direction is clear, everybody agrees and it makes sense.”
